Maybe It's Time To Have A Plan Z

Do you have a goal?

Do you have a plan to achieve it?

You need a plan.

Daydreaming is not a plan.

Dissatisfaction with the way things are going is not a plan.

Talent is not a plan.

Past experience is not a plan.

Bravado is not a plan.

A whole lot of ideas are not a plan.

Money (or getting tips) is not a plan.

Being street smart is not a plan.

Even a burning desire is not a plan.

A plan is a set of actions which will get you to your goal.

A plan is a list of steps.

If you don’t have a plan, get a pen and some paper.

It is time to sit down and write your plan.

If you have no clue how to write your plan, talk to people who have achieved the goal you want to achieve.

Ask them what steps you should take.

Ask them what obstacles you can expect to overcome.

Ask them what mines to avoid.

Ask them what big surprises you can expect.

Without a plan, all you have is a dream.

Without a plan, all you have is empty promises, empty promises to yourself, or empty promises to others.

Even after you write your plan, no doubt it will contain assumptions.

You will assume things will go a certain way.

What if they don’t?

That’s why you need a Plan B:

“If all goes well, I will stick with A approach.”

“If that fails, then it’s time for B approach”

“If that fails too, then it’s time for C approach.”

“If that fails as well, then it’s time for D approach”

…and so on…

Stephen Colbert said something about Elon Musk. Though it’s a tongue in cheek comment, it has truth:

“No one has any idea what's going to happen. Not even Elon Musk. That's why he's building those rockets. He wants a 'Plan B' on another world.”

So what’s your Plan A?

What’s your Plan B?

What’s your Plan C?

Plan C?

I can see you cringing.

What faith do I have in my Plan A, if I already have a Plan C lined up?

Truth is, even if you may not need to think about a Plan C right at this moment, if Plan A and your Plan B don’t work out as planned, you will certainly need a Plan C.

That is, if you are keen on achieving the goals or promises you have made to yourself, and you have made to others.

If you have thought about a Plan B, or a Plan C, when the time comes for it, you will be open to trying something new.

You will be ready.

You will be nimble.

Are you nimble enough for Plan C?

And are your nimble enough for Plan D?

Are you nimble enough for Plan E – if it comes to it?

The difference between success and failure may come down to an ability to be flexible, to be able to go with the flow, and to be determined to do what it takes.

Are you ready to do whatever it takes?

Life’s challenges are humbling.

If you have achieved wild success in some spheres with just a Plan A, you are going to be very upset to find it’s not so simple in all spheres of life.

Yes, there will come a time when a Plan A, and even a Plan B will not work.

The only solution is to keep trying – and to try different things – until something works.

Or it doesn’t.

Along the way, you will learn what works and what doesn’t.

Eventually you may come to the humbling conclusion you have to settle for an alternate and smaller, but still worthwhile goal.

You may have to get out of your own way to accept that reality.

So take your time to think carefully about your goals.

And after you do pick your goals, think about your Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and Plan D.

And don’t go crazy if Plan A and Plan B don’t work.

Plan A and Plan B could fail.

If they do, if the experience leaves you with nothing else, it will leave you with agility, with nimbleness, with humility; and last but not least, it will leave you with wisdom.

After all, it is largely through failure, and through suffering, and through humbling experiences, we achieve wisdom and a philosophy of life.

Maybe It's Time To Get Out of Your Real Straitjacket

Your real straitjacket is not the predicament you are in.

Your real straitjacket is the behavior and the actions that got you into the predicament you are in.

The predicament of bad health….

the predicament of broken relationships…

the predicament of being in a corner…

the predicament of being at a dead end with no visible options…

the predicament of being in the same place of dissatisfaction, you were in, 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 15 years ago.

Your real straitjacket is your repetitive and pointless thought-processes.

Your real straitjacket is the improper use of your time.

Your real straitjacket is the misuse, and under-utilization of your intelligence, your abilities, and your skills.

Your real straitjacket is your lack of respect for the laws of nature, or the laws of justice, or the laws of commonsense.

Your real straitjacket is the lack of attentiveness to what matters most in relationships.

Your real straitjacket is the misuse of your body and your mind.

Your real straitjacket is the misuse and abuse of all the blessings in your life – the blessings of money, the blessings of opportunities, the blessings of second chances, even the very fact you are blessed with the gift of life at this moment – when babies are stillborn, when young children are lost to unfortunate illnesses and accidents.

Your real straitjacket is thinking you are stuck, and you cannot think and act your way out of your current situation.

You can think and act your way out of any situation.

Break the ball and chain.

You do not need to be handcuffed to fear, indecision, and bad choices.

You do not need to be handcuffed to anger, and lack of emotional control.

You do not need to be handcuffed to destructive elements and forces.

Freedom is yours for the asking.

Freedom is yours for the taking.

Freedom is just waking up to the truth - and understanding there is another way to think, another way to behave, another way to respond, another way to use your mind, your body, and your time.

Before you go to bed tonight, say to yourself, I will wake up to the truth tomorrow.

Say to yourself – I will wake up a different person.

Say to yourself – I will wake up with the strength and resolution to defeat the dark forces in my life.

Say to yourself – I will wake up to different choices.

Say to yourself – I will stop being a curse to people in my life.

Say to yourself – I will start being a blessing, and only a blessing, to all the people in my life.

The clock keeps ticking away...

Tonight is the night you should tell yourself “I will break the ball and chain tomorrow and start living a radically new life.”

As always, thanks for sharing my Journey to Wisdom, Meaning and a Better Life.  Like you, I am trying to find my way through this complex maze we call life, and I am honored to have you share my journey, as I continue to seek the wisdom which is hidden in plain sight.

Maybe It's Time To Figure Out What Is Worth Your Time and Trouble

Old friendships are worth your time and trouble.

Getting together with family in a meaningful way is worth your time and trouble.

Spending time with pets is worth your time and trouble.

Reading a book is worth your time and trouble.

Learning a new skill is worth your time and trouble.

Making regular use of a gym or library membership is worth your time and trouble.

Learning to relax through meditation or yoga is worth your time and trouble.

Simplifying your life is worth your time and trouble.

Going out into nature is worth your time and trouble.

Penning your thoughts and feelings is worth your time and trouble.

Learning to manage your money is worth your time and trouble.

Learning to become more self-sufficient is worth your time and trouble.

Finding creative solutions to problems is worth your time and trouble.

Researching subjects on the internet is worth your time and trouble.

Learning to take time to react to situations is worth your time and trouble.  The more time you take, the more sensible and compassionate will be your response.

Learning to laugh is worth your time and trouble.

Hobbies  - whether a favorite author, or a favorite sport or pastime - are worth your time and trouble - as long as they don't get in the way of something that's more worth your time and trouble.

Paying attention to what you eat is worth your time and trouble.

Exercising is worth your time and trouble.

Showing you care, or you are thankful, is worth your time and trouble.

Anything that helps you get over your self-consciousness is worth your time and trouble.

Finally, pursuing a dream is worth your time and trouble.

Whether your dream is to own a home, publish a book, start a business, or to see social or political change take place, you should find out what it will take, and you should put one foot in front of the other to achieve it, making the sacrifices you need to make.

A dream doesn’t become less valuable, just because you never live to see it achieved in your lifetime.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton (and countless other women like her) never lived to see their dream of women being given the right to vote.

This does not mean they were foolish to have dedicated themselves to pursuing that dream for almost all of their adult lives.

It is only because they pursued that dream all of their adult life, did the 19th Amendment to the Constitution come to pass on August 18, 1920, giving women the same rights to vote as men.

Think about this, as you wonder whether the big, bold and ambitious dream you have is worth your time and trouble.

As always, thanks for sharing my Journey to Wisdom, Meaning and a Better Life.  Like you I am trying to find my way through this complex maze we call life, and I am honored to have you share my journey, as I continue to seek the wisdom which is hidden in plain sight.

Happy Birthday to those with August birthdays.  Hope you use your birthday month to birth something new and wonderful in your life. A commitment to living more purposefully, and contemplating what is worth your time and trouble, is sure to birth a new sense of mission and vision in your life.

Maybe It’s Time To Live More Purposefully

To think before you say yes to anything.

To think before you say no to anything.

To look – not just at the price of anything – but the value.

To choose your words carefully.

To choose your responses carefully.

To respond after reflection.

To look at the purpose behind choices you make.

To own your decisions.

To know “why” you are doing something.

To make truth, not expedience or convenience, guide your choices.

To choose actions which will not undermine people’s trust in you.

To choose actions which will enhance, not diminish your opportunities to succeed in relationships, in work, in health, in wealth, in happiness.

To be dependable and punctual.

To engage only in activities that will enrich your life, or enrich someone else’s life.

To make choices according to the way you want to live.

Yes maybe it's time to live more purposefully.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

As always, thanks for sharing my Journey to Wisdom, Meaning and a Better Life.  Like you I am trying to find my way through this complex maze we call life, and I am honored to have you share my journey, as I continue to seek the wisdom hidden in plain sight.
